Hi folks,i,ve no posted for awhile, so i thought you may like a look at my day.
I decided to go for a short walk, about six miles in total. My route would be part of the Borders Abbey Way, which skirts my home town.
The path follows the river Teviot from Hawick down to a small village.
As i walked along i saw this and it made me chuckle.
Further on looking across the river in the distance, you can see Ruberslaw,a long since dead volcano.
And a close up.
As the river winds its way along it starts to get funnelled into a little gorge.
Looking the way i had come.
And the way i was going. This area is called Hornshole, and was the scene of a skirmish between some local Hawick boys and English marauders in 1514, after the battle of Flodden field(1513). The English were carrying the flag from the battle, and were incamped here, and were looking to plunder Hawick. But they were routed by the youngsters and the flag was taken back to Hawick, the flag itself belonged to Hexham, it was navy with a golden cross. Infact the flag itself was only handed back about 15 years ago.
We also have been celabrating it since the 1700's by holding a festival called The Common Riding, which happens in June every year.

But now the only battles fought are among the youth who dare each other to jump from the bridge into the deep water, during the Summer months.
Once up on the bridge, you get an idea of the gulley.
Back down the other side there was a Pied Wagtail sitting on a rock in the river.
A bit farther on, i spotted what could be an Otter spraint on a rock in the middle of the water, there are Otters in the area. But i was,nt wading out to find out.
Also i spotted where a Badger must have came down for a drink.
It was nice to see the super market was open.
Well i was getting towards the village, and i could see my goal for the day appearing on the horizon.
My goal is the trees on the hill in the background.
Once at the village, me and the Abbey way parted company. Now there was a bit of road to hike.
Getting there.
A view from the road to where i was heading.
It really is rather craggy.
Well it was now time to climb. Following the path.
Looking left again we see Ruberslaw in the distance.
The path can get over grown in parts.
I also saw a few of these handsome fellows, strutting their stuff. Stunning colours.
And a few obstacles to negotiate, a downed Willow.
A large rock to skirt.
A but, at last the top is in site. Quite steep.
And finally the goal is reached.
This is a Peel Tower called Fatlips castle, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatlips_Castle
Restoration started.
And it commands some rather nice views from its lofty heights.
Well after taking in the views it was time to head back down, and wait for the wife to come fetch me home.
So there you are, my day out.
Thanks for looking
Cheers Stuart.
