A very long time ago, Esther Rantzen was on some program on the box talking about things herbal. I think it must have been before the mid seventies because I haven't had a TV since then.
She covered lots of different herbal applications and she didn't seem to be too taken with the herbalists. She got on to tobacco substitutes, because apparently the herbalist types had been pushing herbal alternatives to tobacco which according to them were supposed to be healthier. Rose petals were mentioned, I remember that, but I can't remember other things that might have been suggested.
I do remember that she said she'd had a word with some highly regarded doctor about it. She said to him something like "What do you think to smoking rose petals?"
His reply was "It took us long enough to find out how much damage tobacco does..."
