Use some milk... full fat, semi skimmed or whatever. I think there are some enzymes or something but it always worked a treat on my karate gi.

It's a load cheaper than the latest nonsense too.
 
well, the karate gi, as you say, is thick cotton but milk is actually pretty friendly stuff on most things. I used to just rub milk in then stick it in a normal wash... job done.
