To carve a walking stick

...If you can't make one of these, as Mesquite said, you can tie it back to piece of wood, but depending on the diameter of the stick i'd suggest something a little thicker than 2x2.....

I had cast iron drainpipes at my old house, they were fantastic for trying wood to to season straight. Scaffold poles work well too, just force the green stick down inside the scaffold pole and leave it there to season (obviously this works best with sticks that are a similar size to the bore of the pipe).
