I've been using firesteel for a very long time now. (Note, not a ferro rod, a carbon steel with flint)
So far, the only tinder I've used, is charred cloth, and charred cattail down.
In the RM outdoor survival handbook, he states that you can use rosebay willowherb down, especcialy if slightly charred.
That last bit seems to suggest that it doesn't neccesarily need to be charred.
Which leaves me with the question: did anyone here ever ignite an uncharred plant material with a flint and steel?
Thanks in advance
Niels
