Ticks

I use the green tick twirlers...Mostly on Blackie, who seems good at getting ticks.

He also isnt very co operative on letting them be removed, either. I hold him gently and hook the offender...might take several passes.

The actual `twirl` doesnt bother him much, though.

That is something I am very grateful for Dale! Considering what I did for a living, and what I do for hobbies, I have only ever taken two off myself, when work colleagues would get them very regularly, one of my former colleagues took 14 ticks off himself, when I had none, same day, same job. Two of them have had Lyme, one has had it twice.

I have, however, a very unproven, un science based theory…….Garlic! I make every attempt to get some inside me everyday, not to keep ticks away, but I just love it. But I don’t get Ticks…..Who knows.

As an add on to my career, I also taught Outdoor FA and EFAW +F, I retired early from my career working on Dartmoor, 57, but continued teaching FA a few days a month until last year. One thing to also think about with Ticks, apart from what has been said already, is change your cloths after you have been in a Ticky area, bung the worn stuff in the washing machine and wear clean the next day. The little buggers can hang around!
Thats interesting I eat loads of garlic as well. not had any vampires near me either, or women for that matter :). Tell me what is FA and EFAW? DD x

I have only ever found one tick on me when I was much younger. I know correlation doesn’t equal causation, but when a recipe dictates ‘1 clove’ I hear ‘1 bulb’. So perhaps there’s something in that hypothesis.

We had to get a tick off our son. A tiny one that the green plastic tick removers in large and small sizes could not even get close to hooking. Fortunately we forgot the tick removers one Scottish trip and the only tick removal tool we could find there was lifeventure tick tweezers. Those handle even the smallest ones.

My advice is to have alternative tools for ticks. So get the cards, tweezers and slotted mini cr crowbar tools. If you don't you might find you have to wait until it's fed a bit before the tools you have work on it. The longer they're attached, the higher the potential risk if they're carrying the cause of Lymes.

The crowbar tools I find work. Best with most ticks. It's rare to spot a small nymph really early in the feed like we did with our son but still worth the extra precaution of different types of tools in your kitbags.

As to where they get. A couple I know used to backpack in several places together when courting and after marriage. She was very indiscrete when drinking and told us a hilarious tale of having to inspect his Arris by head torch and removing 4 or 5 ticks from very nearly where the sun don't shine. All the while anyone else at the popular camp spot would have been able to see the silhouette on the tent of what was going on! Would have looked funny for sure!

I've got a pair of tick removers in my first aid kit. Its rare I need to use them but was once on a family holiday in Scotland and we all got covered in them and had nothing to remove them. Once bitten twice shy.

It’s only a theory Dale, but I cannot keep the woman away!

FA = First Aid. EFAW = First Aid at Work. +F = Forestry element, which includes Tick awareness.

I got bitten last year and, failing to recognise it, I did everything wrong.

Like you I now have a remover; I’m my case a brass tick-key, permanently attached to my keychain.

My children say it is a talisman. Now that I’ve got it I won’t get bitten - but the day I don’t carry it ………..
