Hi. Completely new to mushroom id'ing...saw some round ones that had grown on a dead tree trunk in my garden ( live in woods near fields), relatively small, say 4/5cms, in a cluster, could these be puffball? Haven't taken a photo as not sure how to put them on yet. They look quite past it now but when I touched it a puff of spores appeared to shoot out from the middle.

Could be stump puffball, but really wouldn’t want to say without clear pictures - can never be too safe with mushrooms.

Sale of Turkey Tail and Cordyceps quietly banned, or their sale regulated.

Yuck, Facebook.

There's a petition going on at change.org.

However, the statement in the petition blurb:

if the whole mushroom is safe for consumption, the logical extension would be that concentrated forms, which contain the same compounds in different ratios, should not require entirely separate approval processes

is a bit off... To claim that consumption of a concentrated extract of a substance that a fungus contains is not different to consumption of the whole fungus seems, to me, irresponsible. It reminds me of a series of incidents in Sheffield a good few years ago of people buying some exotic rot vegetable (manioc or taro, I think) without knowing how to prepare it, and promptly poisoning themselves.

Yuck, Facebook.

Sorry, but that's how both me, and you, found out about it. I don't like it any more than you do, but it's where the sharing of knowledge occurs now. The fungus groups are good, same as the tree ones. It's where you'll find Geoff Dann and Paul Stamets these days.
