here is the story of the legendary ''Leatherman'', the guy who walked a 366 mile circuit every 34 days continuously for about 27 years, he got his name as all the clothes he wore were all handmade by himself from leather, he carried a leather bag to carry his few possessions in, made by himself too of course.

Here's a slightly longer documentary about the the "Leatherman" that provides a bit more on the story.

A gentleman called Russell Schneider walked the entire Leatherman circuit in replica gear last year and you can find some of his photo's on tumblr http://leathermanmovie.tumblr.com/
NB: link is image heavy but will probably be fascinating to all the leather-workers here

Thanks again Bishop, some great stuff and photos in that link. That guy must have been as tough as the leather he wore, and no mean feat to replicate the journey either for both walker and leather worker, imagine walking in a 60lb coat. Thanks for adding good stuff to thread Bishop :)

I am both saddened and grateful by those videos. I am saddened that whoever was "the leatherman" had to endure so much hardship for so long and had no one to trust or talk to.
Grateful that I don't endure such hardships and I have someone I trust and can talk to about anything.
I have a friend who is a manic depressive and some of the "leatherman's" traits have a similarity, back then it was not a known diagnosis, thankfully we have moved on.
Thanks for the vids Joonsy and Bishop, very much thought provoking and interesting in equal measure.

Rob.

Every once in a while a less travelled path beckons and the unlikeliest of people step up. Emma Gatewood is another such legend who went out for a walk and became the first woman to hike the entire 2,168-miles of the Appalachian Trail in one go. Her gear comprised of an army blanket, a raincoat, a plastic shower curtain all carried in a home made denim bag and wore a regular pair of 'Keds' sneakers (Brit's know them better as lace up plimsoles or daps). The year was 1955 and she was 67 years old.
