I came across The Bushcraft Journal for the first time and it looks interesting. I also read a how at some point it became free to download pdf copies, including all their back issues. When I visited their site however, it's definitely a paid subscription, though one that seems pretty good value. So although I'm certainly not averse to paying for it, I'd like to know what happened to the free downloads. Any clues? And is it any good?

It’s been around a few years now and is a fine magazine. After launching by subscription if then became free for a while but now requires a reasonable subscription. There are some high quality contributors and a wide range of topics are covered. I’ve been happy to subscribe all along and it’s enjoyable to browse the back issues on my iPad at the touch of a button. I’m just a punter who enjoys it and have no axe to grind, if you’ll excuse the pun...

I've met the lad that started it and I think he did a great job getting some good contributors in from the beginning and there have been some excellent articles over the years. He clearly struggled to keep it going as a free mag and when it went subscription I paid up and bought what was offered (or appeared to be) as a life-long subscription - unfortunately the new round of changes (I suspect involving new owners/funders/partners - I don't know) has reneged on that and I stopped getting it.

Ignoring that, I can recommend the magazine.

uk mainly in the Midlands though
I have been a subscriber from the beginning and Danny is a great guy. The Journal is a great magazine and it fitted well in the magazine front. I also subscribed to the Bushcraft Magazine by Steve Kirk (which now unfortunately has ended but was a pinnacle magazine with excellent specialist knowledge), The it is the Journal with in depth articles covering general and specialist skills to a great depth, then the beginner is Bushcraft and Survival skills which is a good magazine with a lot of basic and interest articles.

They have all had great writers and contributors over the years. I recommend trying to get hold of the all. The Journal is only available via computer and you have to print it off yourself if you need a hard copy of an article but is well worth it, cause it is on computer it often a lot bigger than a paper copy would be which is great as it means more information and articles.

Sorry for the delay in replying, I'm out of the country and have a sporadic Internet connection. Thanks for your help - it sounds good, I think I'll download a couple to try.
