Hi all, just been looking at the back of my car and the new tarp i got the other week.
What im wondering has anyone ever tried to drape there tarp over the rear of the car and then peg out to form a shelter.
A couple of the places i car camp i pitch right next to the motor, im wondering if its worth trying to incorperate the two together.

Thanks for that Martin, was thinking more along the lines of creating a tunnel over the back of the car.
Is that the Andy Wink you had up.

Thats is part of my idea as well as using the electrical hookup for some power.
Hoping someone might have done this in the past and tell me of any problems like wind being funneled under the car.

Not quite what your after, but a next door neibour had a landrover, and he fashioned a rolling tarp off the roof to one side. He was an engineer type chap so knocked it up himself, Basically a pivoted rod which the tarp wrapped around inside a section of drain pipe with a slot cut along it's length - so the tarp wound around the rod but inside the drain pipe cover. for use just unwound it used two poles at the outer corners and guys which gave a good deal of cover. I think he ended up with a REALLY long bit of tarp so it could go away from the jeep for about 10-12ft then come down to the ground in a kind of L shape. Unfortunatley no photos :(

as an aside he also had a 4 man tent which packed onto the roof of the jeep and unfolded and setup on the roof abit like a homemade/knocked up version of this .... http://www.overland.co.za/Rooftop_Tents/

Why not just buy a tent rather than trying to make your car into a tent? Run power from your car into the tent if you bringing your tv.

The canopy annex for a hi gear Kalahari tent will strap over a car giving you a shelter on the side or rear. Then attach a draught skirt to bottom of bumper so you don't get the cold coming in from beneath the car.

Its not for the meets. If im out and want a quick setup overnight or on the camp site i dont need a tent.
What im hoping is to just throw the tarp over and peg it down, two poles to lift the front and done.

I did think of this but being tight and dont want to spend.

Hi mate, I've used a 3x3 tarp attached to the roof bars of the CRV with 2 poles to the front - on the side of the motor though. Works a treat for an admin area but I've not slept it - slept in the back of the car with the seats folded away. No doubt you could if you parked in a sheltered area or got off the ground in a camp bed or hammock. Or a cheap windbreak against the car would probably cut the draught from under the car............

One problem with a vehicle is that unless you park it next to a wall or something you can get a howling gale underneath it. If you have a wall or something you may as well use that.

Another is condensation. If you spend a night in a vehicle, or under a tarp with the tarp over the vehicle and window open, you'll soak a couple of towels drying out the inside of the glass.

Think about how much high-octane fuel you might have in the petrol tank before you do any cooking!

i have thought of that, i have a campcot that would lift me above the hight of the gap under the car. Will give it all a try tomorrow all being well.

Only downside was the snoring.

There are companys that sell what you seek. Am annoyed twice now been near caranex and unable to pop in.
