Tarp tent what one ?

Been looking at some different types of tar tent was just foundering if anyone has had any use of these or has any opinions on what is best or better and why

If you have never tried tarp tenting before, may I suggest a really cheap 3 x 2.5 m cammo tarp from the ebay sites, about £6. Or really cheap Aldi ,Lidl tarps.
You can still get all the configurations of a tarp tent, but at a fraction of the cost.

I'd forget it & just get a decent lightweight tent! Better in inclement weather!

I use the Coleman Avior X3, fantastic for the money!

I am trying to find a suitable Tarp / tent or combo myself.

I kept coming back to the Golite Shangri La 3 as I will be taking my dog with me, however there are 2 issues,

1 there is only 1 yellow one in the UK so far as I can tell, (Till May)

2 They seem very expensive for what is in effect a tarp?

Come to that All "lightweight tarps" seem incredibly expensive for what is a square of material with a few holes / tabs?

Does anyone else agree?

Anyway still struggling with my decision and I dont think I will go down just the tarp structure as it would be nice in bad weather (UK) to batten down the hatches somehow.

So heres my latest thought, I it will raise some eyebrows maybe in a good way maybe you will think I am mad!

Any feedback greatly appreciated;

Get a Mk3 Vango Force Ten nylon Fly sheet only (The green one), £70.00 currently

use walking poles to secure A frame instead of the heavy A frame poles! and add a tab to middle top to secure a line to support between each walking pole.

Guess you could also use a bit of bungee two champagne corks and use them as stoppers thread the bungee through the holes & hey presto you can suspend from a tree etc.

Fashion some type of bath tub floor yourself and there we have it.

Now is it possible? would it be stable? (If guide down properly)

And please someone talk me out of this idea as in lieu of the golite SL3's coming in early its my only other option.

ps anyone know the weight of the green MK3 flysheet on its own

All of the kit you fancy is at the top end price wise, as said you could have one made cheaper than some of those.
There are some really decent cheap tents about which would do the same job. You have to put your needs and then try to select
a suitable one from the list. I have a 1 man gelert tent which was cheap as chips, I also have a tenth wonder tarp & hammock set up too
and have recently traded a auscam tarp. I'm sure you will find your needs are met buy something that's already available.

I cant comment on the rest of the tarp tents but i have the mld solomid + inner in cuben fibre very light and bomb proof in high winds and rain ,coln18 has the duomid in cuben fibre and after seeing the bigger duomid its the one i would have, both very very good though

I have quite a few MLD items and i would happily wait twice as long for their kit ,it really is that good

ive gone for the trailstar in the end for a couple of reasons really

room and lots of it very light has multiple ways of putting it up

has been tried and tested in the arctic

has been used in winds of 80 mph + and held strong

no zips to break

now just got to wait for the thing hehe

You could do worse than the shangri la. My dog and i have enjoyed using it for three years. Light, stable in wind, easy to put up and take down and roomy for one man and a canine. It will take two adults pretty comfily but ignore the claimed three berth.
