I spent a few hours today making some Sycamore Spoons, four of these are for a commission from a chap down in the West Country, the others are spares/for my and the families use.

These are all still very rough having been carved from wood that was still standing as a tree on Wednesday, so before i can move on to making the finishing cuts, i need to let the wood dry just a tad, all being well in a few days time i should be able to get these finished, then four will be off in the post and the others, well they will go into the ever growing pot of spoons i guess.

The knife pictured is the one used to carve all of the spoons you see.

Hi there to everyone @ bushcraftuk, I'm new to this forum, and i have enjoyed reading all the posts, I met Kepis a few days ago when i was out looking for a few sticks to carve, and he suggested this forum.
Mark is a decent bloke, and i have just asked him to make a sheath for my wright & sons knife.
It seams to me that everyone here is of the same mind, set and i look forward to getting involved with the discussions, and asking a few myself.

Good to see you here mate and nice to meet you up the woods the other day

Nice work Mark.

Theres a good degree of uniformity across all those spoons mate. Difficult to achieve when all made by hand. :)

Do you use a template or is it all by eye?

How do you find the sycamore to carve? I know it's a soft wood and so easier to shape but I've always found it produces little 'threads', obviously something to do with the grain of the wood, when I reached the finishing stages. How do you cope with them?

Lovely set of spoons by the way!

I myself wait until it dries out before finishing, otherwise as you say you can get a pull of threads , sometimes on the edge of the bowl.
I now wet mine after it is finished, leave it a day then fine sand the little fibres that the wetting produced, it leaves a nice smooth finish.

Hello to Rockmonkey, I met you up the hill the other day with Kepis.
Glad that you have found the forum mate.
