The main blade in the Victorinox SAK is disappointing, it is noticeable soft for a blade. I have carried a SAK for years, but almost never use the blade, preferring to carry something with better steel for cutting jobs.

That Roxon is interesting. Not UK EDC, but the deployment lever would answer the need for a hole.

There is a limited customised option for blades.

I am wondering if there might not already be a tool out there to help deploy nail nick tools for folk without much nail. Doesn’t seem like it would be too difficult to make something and have it on a lanyard.

Best of luck! Hope you find a satisfactory solution!!

Chris

That is properly nice isn't it.. Lovely.

Is there a model other than the 'huntsman' for EDC?

Think I have had one of them in my pocket everyday for the last 30 years or so. Must have had about 8 or 9 of them over those years and still have a few floating around.

There is a tool. I can't recall the name but probably something like a blade puller! I've seen made up ones to look in a similar style to the knife. Essentially looks like a pry bar or letter opener. I think they actually use such a device in the victorinox factory when QCing.

Yeah, but it’s not what I think of when someone says Swiss Army Knife. I think I had something similar to that once.

What you need @TeeDee is a Pico Widgy to open the nail nick blades ;)

I carry a Huntsman virtually every day. The tweezers and the toothpick are useful. My granddaughters are constantly saying "grandad can I borrow your scissors please?"
But it isn't one handed opening.

You can use a coin as a blade puller. Never tried one, but I imagine one of those trolley tokens might do the job as well, and will come with a hole to attach the thing to the knife.

Is there any risk to the blade pivot in regularly using a blade opener from one side? This is just a thought. When you use the nail-nick conventionally you oppose the thumb pressure with a finger.

Would a tiny padded gripper or pliers that you could carry on a key chain/necklace work?

My main need is to open the main blade single handed. Not to reach for something else to help me get access to blades.

The last time I was struggling fighting a shark underwater , I had serious issues deploying the blade , My left hand pressed up against the snout of the beast pushing it back and its keeping its gaping maw away from my flesh , my other hand struggling to single handed opening of my knife.. And in that life or death struggle , I thought to myself- "TD.... What are you doing buddy? this isn't right?!? "

I then put the internal monologue on pause as it didn't feel the right time and Sharky was getting kinda rude.

In seriousness - I just need the main blade or two to have a large finger / thumb opener - I would have no intention of carrying something in addition to stop and pull away at smaller a blades.

Something very small and metallic on a lanyard to assist in opening them ? Yes I could see that , but it would have to be very very small ( modified 1/2 pence ) for me to not get annoyed at it.

I could see a little washer being quite unobtrusive and do the job.

On the other hand, it doesn't really sound like a SAK is the right choice for your need unless you get a spydernox.

That is one of the very best demos that I have seen on YouTube:

Comprehensive
Competent
Confident
Conversational
Couldn’t be better

Neat :) - well, have you modified your new RG79 yet?

Not got it yet. Just placed the order.

Not sure I'm convinced modding it in such a way is a terrific idea. Just interesting that its included by Vic but in a covert way.

The reason i'm not convinced its a great idea if if one wanted to apply torque in a regular fashion I think once could fashion a more secure hex bitholder and just use the the main body of the SAK as the leverage arm.

There is probably a whole world of 3D etsy mods and add ons I am not up to speed on.

I'd like to have a pouch with the SAK ( Make my own ) and have a little composite screwdriver hex set with it along with a ferro rod ( Not the silly little things that screw down into the corkscrew - proper sized ferro rod )

. Think that setup would cover a multitude of sins.
