I have never owned a proper swiss army penknife - just never appealed to me so I bypassed them at an early age and went straight to fix blades.

Although I have a Mauser Officers penknife and I think its a great knife with an awesome saw I don't tend to use it much due to its rarity and my lack of Fingernails.

So what I'm looking for is a suggestion for a swiss army type Penknife but with a ( not sure what its technical name is ) large finger/thumb loop inbuilt into the blade so I can easily deploy it.

I'd like a suitable large cutting blade , saw blade , awl , can opener , maybe a screwdriver flat/posi and to be honest not too much more.

I don't want a super thick chunky penknife - more restrained and limited but blade length and width to be sturdy and fit for purpose -not small and insignificant.

Can anyone narrow down the offerings to what is available please? suggestions appreciated.

My only take on 40 years of Swiss Army knife ownership is the most used blades/tools for me are the scissors, the bottle opener and the corkscrew followed by the tweezers .. the model I have is the Climber and the smaller second blade has seen more use than the main knife blade … I’ve used the larger blades Swiss Army knives which perhaps better suit what you describe but never felt they were the best choice for a larger blade to do lots of cutting ..

Nothing more than an observation from a user …

The scissors are worth it alone

Not UK legal carry (due to locking blade, let’s not start that again) but there are some Victorinox ones that may suit, check out the larger blades

I have had the forester since the 90s and still love it

Agreed, except I buy wine with screw tops if I'm camping these days :) The scissors gets nearly daily use. My 'dress' knife is an Alox Farmer X, my work knife (i.e. all other times) is a Swiss Champ.

I know what TeeDee means though, getting the blades out is often a bit nail-breaking - still wouldn't be without one and haven't been since about 1976.

I have been looking around for a while now for a Victorinox style knife that is easier to open. My priorities are a good blade, a wood saw, a bottle opener (usually comes with a screwdriver end) and a scissors (as said above, the most used tool).

I haven't committed yet because I still think there's something else out there but this is the closest I have found (but, not seen or tried one yet):

Saw blade a very definite need? Otherwise the Compact has it all and is probably the best of the 2 layer SAKs.

Yes - saw ideally and there appears to be no large thumb hole for deployment.

I'm not joking about having no protruding fingernails. If you gave me a blackboard to scratch all I could produce is the sound of silence.

#The large deployment hole is really the keystone salient feature for me.

I am puzzled. How will other tools be accessed without nails, and if you cannot access the other tools, why even think about buying a SAK?

Of all tools in a SAK the blade is the easiest to deploy by nail nick because it is long, and the depth puts the nail nick out in the open. Certainly in comparison with other tools.

Are you set on a SAK? If so OH Forester would fit the bill. I have a spare unused one I'd sell, save you a few quid.

Have a look at the Roxon Flex Companion. The tools are removable and can be replaced with options to suit your needs for the day. They have no nail nicks, just a small deployment lever which is also the unlocking mechanism.

I'm sorry you are puzzled.

I would anticipate using the main blade more than anything else and would rather have easier deployment than fiddling around getting my stumpy finger nail in there. I have Spyderco's and like the way they are easy to use one handed.

I'm quite prepared to spend time and dexterity wrestling with smaller blades when that time comes.

I can’t find the thread in which blade and saw combinations were discussed. There were some great looking examples of folding knives with just the two tools.
Perhaps othersz’ Linkfoo is better than mine.

(I am STILL working on an Opinel fitted with saw and blade.)

The main blade in the Victorinox SAK is disappointing, it is noticeable soft for a blade. I have carried a SAK for years, but almost never use the blade, preferring to carry something with better steel for cutting jobs.

That Roxon is interesting. Not UK EDC, but the deployment lever would answer the need for a hole.

There is a limited customised option for blades.

I am wondering if there might not already be a tool out there to help deploy nail nick tools for folk without much nail. Doesn’t seem like it would be too difficult to make something and have it on a lanyard.

Best of luck! Hope you find a satisfactory solution!!
