I know this is a bit dumb but how do you lot protect the blade of your crook knives, are there sheaths for sale or is it a case of making one. Also what is is best method of sharpening them.

Many thanks

Chris

The only stupid question is the one that wasn't asked.

Wrap cord round the sharp bit, carve a blade shaped space in a bit of wood, follow the link in the post above for a sheath.Or just wrap it in a bit of leather.

Chris,

This is what i'd do.. get some leather(bucksnin) and make a medicine bag. Now put then knife blade inside the bag and pull the drawstring, the leather will help absorb moisture. If you want you can make another bag for the handle and connect the ties .. just a thought

It is a perfectly sensible question and there are lots of possible solutions. Most of them work best with the smaller Svante djarv spoon knives.

The simplest sheath I have heard suggested is an empty 12gauge shotgun cartridge case to fit over the blade. Similar to this and what I use at the moment is the plastic pot that Mini MM's were being sold in for a while. They came in a variety of colours and have a hinged lid, the longer length means that you get a push fit over the handle (I reckon these pots would also be ideal for storing cotton wool balls soaked in vaseline for tinder).
The more bushcrafty solution that I was shown by Juha from Woodlore is to carve one out of a small piece of wood, and this would work with any size of crook knife. Have a look at the photo here in Risby's gallery it shows the spoon knife gaurd that he made after doing the Woodlore Camp Craft course.

Or make one out of leather if you prefer as has already been suggested.
