I've decided to try using a structural ridgeline on my hammock but due to the built in insect net, I can't just attach it at the ends so needed a couple of "dog bones" (piece of rope with a loop at each end) to go through the ends of the hammocks. These would be joined to my existing whoopie slings and connected by said ridgeline (which is a whoopie sling in itself as I want to be able to dial in the length before making a fixed one).

I've read that although the locked Brummel eye splice is pretty strong (and hasn't let me down on my whoopies thus far) it's not as strong as a straight bury. So I buried about 6 inches of each end and secured them using the inner strands from some 550 paracord (using instructions here: http://www.samsonrope.com/Documents... Whipping Seizing Procedures_SEPT2012_WEB.pdf)

To hold all these loops together I thought a soft shackle would be in order. I've made these in the past like a mini whoopie with a complicated knot at the end but found this method for making a stronger soft shackle which only needs a simple overhand knot:

Apparently this gives a breaking strain of 230% of the single cord, which I can't quite believe, but I'm sure it will take my meagre frame :D! It also has the advantage of no loose ends as they're buried into the locked Brummel loops so the knot is unlikely to undo - don't know if you could make these with a straight bury which might not need the lock stitching since it's tied in a knot...
