Not really sure if this belongs here but....

A friend of mine wants to start doing some designs into leather, and what kind of things would she need to get to get started in it all? Is there a basic 'set' type thing to get going? What kind of tools?

Thanks in advance!

Lots of leather suppliers can provide a carving set. Le prevo do a basic set which costs about £25 or so and you get a set of stamps and a swivel knife. The idea is that you transfer the design you want on to a piece of wetted leather (this is called casing), use the knife to cut along the outlines and then use the various stamps to edge the design and add features. If you just want to have a go all you need is a very sharp knife/scalpel, a light mallet and something to use as a stamp - nails etc. As ever, you tube has got lots of video tutorials - look for leather carving or stamping.
