Stabilising wood?

I have managed to aquire a nice sizable piece of elm burr i want to use for knife handles.

I have been told they have a tendancy to warp a bit and that i can stabilize it myself.

Anyone know how to do this? What i will need, the process etc?

If memory serves me well, it involves making a home-made vacuum pump with an old fridge motor etc. There may be other methods too.
