I'm finally going to give in and buy a Spyderco UK Penknife, 2nd Hand Hopefully,
But I wanted to know if there any good clones to look out for just to wet my feet before diving in to getting 1.
Cheers

Honestly Spyderco knives are pretty great and you’re better off just buying a real one. If you don’t like it you can always sell it on, they hold their value pretty well. (Edited alongside your updated first post)

I would recommend putting up a Wanted advert for a real one to save on retail price, and then if you don't get on with it, sell it on. You're likely to get your money back on a second hand one as they're always a popular model.

Fakes are not a good move when it comes to knives as you have no idea what you're actually getting in terms of the materials used. They have absolutely no scruples (obviously) when it comes to badging something as having X steel when actually it's something completely different. Can't advise going down that route.

The fakes are rubbish. Local market has em in all colours and they all say S30v on em! Even the yellow Salt version!
I found one in a job lot I bought, it's ok but I'm not a fan of the ukpk anyway.IMG_20250809_143329.jpg

I bought the Heinnie version, really was not for me....as others said, get a real one, then if you don't like it you can sell it on, just like I did

If you just want to test the waters, I’d say skip the cheap knock-offs. They usually have sloppy grinds, soft steel, and bad lock tolerances, so you won’t get a fair feel for what a real UKPK is like. If you want something budget but still decent, look at Byrd knives (Spyderco’s budget line), same general vibe, way cheaper, and still solid quality.

There are many fake Spydies around, but you’re not going to know if you want a real one by trying the fake version.
As many have said, just get one. You won’t lose much on it if you change your mind.

I'll change the Title to ''Clones'' as I agree with others comments tbh, And it's more the blade shape I'm interested in trying out for an EDC knife.
I owned the Military version yr's ago while serving and it hardly saw the light of day let alone light use.
And I will put a request in the ''Wanted'' thread.
Cheers and points of views taken on board.

I will loan you a UKPK for a month if you want to try one out, and as long as I get it back?

I love my UKPKs. I had the original in G10 and S30V, didn’t like the steel much, but liked the knife, right till I lost it. Then got the S110V version…oh, that thing is a cardboard slicing machine. Now have a bright yellow one in Magnacut specifically for outdoors adventures and it’s brilliant.

That’s a nice offer @Chris. A try before you buy is a great idea, the leaf blade isn’t for everyone. Like the other Chris I’m a huge fan of the yellow Magnacut Salt and tend to pocket it over the Heinnie G10 version because it’s so light and easy to carry. I also disliked the plastic feel of FRN scales, changed my mind about that too. It’s light and incredibly tough stuff.

Took me many years to come round to the UKPK, partly because I was working as a tree surgeon and could carry pretty much anything, so daily workhorses were either a Benchmade Griptian or a Spyderco Tenacious (great lunchtime food knife). But at some point, I ‘got’ the whole thing with the UKPK and now reckon it to be the best UK legal EDC there is.

Spyderco prices seem to have gone through the roof, but I’d still avoid a copy/clone and try to pick one up cheapish somewhere. There’s a Reddit knife swap sub that had a yellow Salt and a UKPK drop point on there the other day.

With regards to the UKPK, do most people favour the plain edge or the serrated one? I’ve never owned a spyderco but have always seen them as a serrated edge knife

I’m very tempted by a salt

Spyderco may have pioneered the serrated edge, but they do more plain versions. Only serrated knife I have had was a little Cold Steel Voyager, and a leatherman I guess. If cutting rope, of skinning catfish, the serrations were useful. really not good for any form of whittling.
The usual advice is that if you need a toothy edge, sharpen with a coarser stone.
The Cold steel was bought in the 90s, and I have had no desire for another serrated blade since. There are folk that love them, so it’s clearly down to what one uses a knife for.
