Been for a bit of a wonder around in the local woods, looking for Chanterels (Bit optermistic I know) and to no avail!

I did find that the sap is running nicely in the birch round here and also found my first Pignuts of the season!

Here are some pics!

As it was growing in the ground. Note the 90deg bend

To demonstate the tread thin nature of this stem here is a picture next to my knife blade

And the cleaned "Nut"

Hope this is of use to someone!

I was down in London over the weekend and its quite amazing to see how much further on spring is down there compared to west wales. Bright green buds on the trees and blossom here and there, round Aber things are still very sleepy!

Nice find by the way!

I have never heard of pignuts before. I see now they are a tuber. I suppose technically we should not be disturbing the roots of a wild plant, but saving the seed and growing them in our garden.

Good point!

I should point out that I have the permission of the landowner to remove plants!

Also this plant is abundant in the area

Cheers :beerchug:

Spring? Whats that? We are expecting a considerable amount of snow here on Sunday if the weather forecast is correct. :(

Snow? Oh yeah, I remember that - we used to get it all the time in winter, didn't we? ;)

As for looking for chanterelles in March, that's more than optimistic...

Thought it might be...

If you are lucky enough to find any, for the love of god, don't tell anyone! ;)

Time to begin my annual pignut hunt then - no luck yet!

I thought the leaves were much more needle-like on a pignut. Do they vary?

We had our first pignut harvest last weekend too. (Likewise, we also had permission from the landowner to remove them as they are growing in abundance).

Also the ramsons are growing nicely too, no flowering stems yet, but the leaves are still nice and mild. Looking forward to the rest of the spring bounty that is starting to peep through.

Great photos Pignut.

Haven't found any in my neck of the woods yet, even though bluebells are abundant. Where I used to live, about 7 miles away, I found a great patch because I was following badger tracks and found that Brock had been scoffing them :)

too nice to sit by the PC, I'm off out looking for pignuts!
