Folks its not about the poor carving, more about the wood.
This lovely grain is the curssed Gorse that grows everywhere.
It you have any have a go it spoon knives out easily and is light.

I think that the 'trunks' of the bush are great as they have a gnarled look, often with the bark split away and the inner part exposed, a little like a big Bonzai , a world of oportunity for someone handy with the old carving tools.
