I'm thinking about asking Santa for a splitting maul. I remember seeing a couple of folk with a yellow handled maul at the Bushmoot that was amazing (to me anyway!) - I'm sure it was splitting medium sized rounds when allowed to simply drop under it's own weight.

I seem to remember it had sort of a second wedge cast into the cheek. I think it was this http://www.screwfix.com/p/roughneck-splitting-maul-8lb/87268

Can anyone confirm please?

I have a mate who owns one of those Roughneck mauls and whilst OK I far prefer mine which as far as I can tell was made by Ochsenkopf (Ox Head) from Germany then sold through various other brand names like Bahco, Stihl, Oregon, and even Silverline.
Its got a 3 kilo head and hickory shaft.

After giving a Gransfors Uber expensive one a serious case of of looking at recently I'm not convinced they are a better tool to actually use. Plus they are about twice the cost.

Splitting mauls are simple tools and its the shape and weight that does the work, get it right and sharpness doesn't make much difference really.
