Yes they do work. Might not penetrate through the leather but will definitely colour the surface. Depending on the dye, it might rub off when wet. Test it first on a scrap piece of leather. If it does rub off, it just means that you have to seal in the dye with a sealer. Acrylic clear coat works great.
