Dear All,

After discussing with Tone re. the merits of putting this thread up, it was thought, as it isnt a commercial venture for Woodland Organics, that it would be a benefit to any members that had an interest.

We are really pleased to be able to offer you a fantastic opportunity and at the same time help out a very good friend of Woodland Organics and his wife who are the celebrated authors - Ed Parker and Anna Lewington.

Their works include:

Silly question but what are they about?

I mean I know ones trees and ones plants but are they field guides or theoretical pieces, natural history or something else?

Sorry Jack can you enlighten us!!

Dear Gary.

No problems.

Ed Parkers book is primarily a book on trees that are at least a thousand years old, with many being prehistoric.

This book documents, with outstanding photography, some very historic trees around the world. It also has a in-depth write on each tree species, it also gives you the following;

Botanical Names
World Distribution
Oldest Known Living Specimen
Religious Significance
Conservation Status

This book to me, should be in everyone’s collection who has the slightest interest in tress. The photography is unbelievable. Ed travels the world and has just come back from Vietnam on a trip and he has been to over 30 countries documenting environmental issues and has done a lot of work on third world poverty and the destruction of the rain forest.

Ed, now travels the world with a Hennessy Hammock supplied by  ) nad that is how good they are and I invited him to do a talk to the Dorset Coppice Group, and as a rule and at the end of the talk the chair ( who was me) has to do the summing up and the taking of questions for speaker, well, for the first time in my life, I was truly speechless, this is how good he is and how profound his knowledge is.

Ed has written over 18 books and works closely with WWF.

You will not be disappointed, I assure you.

Anna’s book ( Ed’s good lady) is another most have book.

It’s hard to say something quick about this book. Really the best thing to say is that anybody, with the remotest interest in plants, should have this book. You well be amazed by how much information is within it’s pages. It takes to all the continents of the world and explains the uses of the plant, how it is used, i.e., for clothing, food, medicine, dye, poison etc etc.

Here are a few headers.

Plants that care for us
Plants that clothe us
Plants that feed us
Plants that house us
Plants that cure us
Plants that transport us
Plants that entertain us.

For those of us who think we have some plant knowledge, well think again as this book will make you do that. You would not believe how plants are used and consumed around the world. There is one picture of as house in Haverhill, UK using mainly hemp in it’s construction.

Wonderful reports on tropical hardwoods and there future and a couple of great sections going under the names of Plants for Engines and Dynamite from plants.

Great section on health and well being on cuts, bruises and skin conditions, pain killers and cough and colds and on malaria.
I could go on but I think you get the point. All photography by Ed Parker and again outstanding work, they have even managed to get a hazel coppice in there!............from Dorset!

Buy one and you will learn and you will enjoy. Both these books are in my collection.
