Some post cold holiday projects.

I was loaded with the cold over Christmas but finally started to feel better a few days ago. I felt well enough to have a footer about with some projects.

First off I made a firefighting necklace. I actually made two, one for a neighbour. It’s a leather lace with a tungsten carbide scraper fitted to a bit of antler and a cut and drilled ferro rod made into a sort of toggle. Cutting a ferro rod with a hacksaw is “interesting”. I did the drilling with the rod in a vice underwater to stop the sparks.




Next project was a small pocket notebook. I’ve made a number of notebooks and sketchbooks but they are usually a bit big to be easily pocketable. I burned the design on but had to dye it as well as it was not as clear as I wanted. I will probably add either a fixed or detachable pencil holder later. The binding rings have an outside diameter of 10mm if that helps give some scale to it.




And today I was in the mood for some carving. I carved a flour scoop for my wife. Turned out pretty well. I also carved an aero press stirrer but didn’t take a picture of it. Tomorrow I think I might carve a coffee caddy scoop.










Sadly back to work on Monday so the pace of making things will slow a bit.

Nice work John, l like the notebook are the loops the disktype? They look like brass, I’ve only seen plastic ones before

@g4ghb the discs are Atoma binding disks. They are aluminium so matt silver but still so much better than the plastic ones. Also the Atoma ones are wider than the metal disc planner ones. I prefer the wider look.

Love the notepad. Are you just using the paper to act as a template for cutting the leather slots or do you use a 'proper' one?

Here you go. I usually use the 24mm for my books but in this case I used some 10mm ones to keep it thin.

Love the notepad. Are you just using the paper to act as a template for cutting the leather slots or do you use a 'proper' one?

I have a punch for the paper and tape a bit of punched paper to the leather so I can line up the punch and cutting. I have a punch that cuts ovals for the wide part of the discs then I cut the slots from these with a knife.

The paper punch only takes a few sheets so you can’t fit leather in it.

You can buy the toggles for the necklace predrilled so you don't get the sparking problem as you cut and drill the holes!. I've used them before now. I like the striker idea. Very neat.

I’ve seen the toggles for sale and they aren’t expensive. I’ve also seen versions of the necklace for less than a fiver on eBay but the fun was in the making with spare stuff I had to hand.
