Solar Eclipse

How are you guys and gals going to view the solar eclipse later?

I have a small monocular (42x10) that I have made a lens cap for to stop it down to 15mm. That should reduce the thermal load on the lens and also give a longer depth of field. That going to be mounted on a tripod and the image projected onto a white card surface. Tried it last night and get an image of the sun about the size of a small plate. Was even able to see a sunspot. Just need to keep an eye on temperature.

Was thinking of putting my bigger scope up but we dont have a clear view West from where I normally put it. However, there is space for the smaller setup, closer to the house.

I have a solar filter glass that I can use with the naked eye or a telescope. I may try and take a photo or two as well.

I went out yesterday to the park to try to find a decent viewing spot, but this eclipse happens quite low in the sky and there are to many tall trees.

This morning mum drove us out to a spot where we'd been back in March to get her used to driving again after a long break. I'd gone along a footpath through a field, then, and thought it would be good for tonight's eclipse.

So we're going back there this evening with folding chairs, special eclipse glasses and filter for her camera.

They will work for a bit... Might have some problems in the morning - bit of blindness etc

I'll keep one eye shut and use the glass eye.

With the eclipse and the Perseid meteors later tonight I'll be disappointed if there's no triffids roaming the streets tomorrow. Make a pleasant change from the tourists at least.

Apparently astronomers have been explaining that you don’t put it on your head. (It interferes with your foil lined hat.)

I'll be using the prismatic scope off my sextant. I fitted it with a piece of Baader film, purely for taking the instruments index error, via the Sun .

Would you Adam & Eve it, for weeks we've had clear blue skies from sun up to sunset & today forecast the same. But what rolled in about 6pm? Yep, clouds. Fortunately there were some breaks but standing around in 37 °C, whilst the event took place wasn't worth it & I gave up after about Half an hour. There was a strange light & it did get a little dark.

I tried a pinhole camera method and can't say I saw much, unfortunately. It was a clear line of sight but just couldn't capture it.
