ray mears explained in one of his programes how the people hiding in woodland in what i think was belarus minimized smoke from there cooking fires in order to avoid it betraying there location.
Does anyone remember seeing this and how it was done.
Many thanks for any help

There is a method of fire building where you have your fire underground. Dig two holes down about 18 inches and about 18 inches to two feet apart. Carefully excavate the bottom of the two holes until there is a tunnel joining them. With a favourable breeze, and a well controlled fire at the bottom of one hole, air is drawn down the other hole and creates a clean-burn fire that is hot enough to produce very little smoke, and because the fire is below ground level, no one can see the flames either.

On the particular tv program that Ray talked about this the people hiding from the Germans used a long chimney pipe, discharging close to the ground. The smoke would cool while in the pipe and mostly condense in the pipe before dripping onto the ground instead of floating up above the trees and giving their position away.

When visiting Thailand (RM that is) and talking about the Vietnam war, he mentioned the Vietnames used charcoal brasiers (spelling?), made out of big coffeetins (or similar) to cook without (much) smoke in fear of being detected and being bombed.

Still used in Thailand, Laos etc btw (not out of fear  )

Hello There
Hard woods like oak and hickory give lots of heat but little smoke. You can also fan the smoke when needed, like when you first start the fire. But once you got the fire burning good the hard woods should produce very little smoke.

Good luck!
