Hi all,
Not been here for a while.

I'm going to be getting out this winter and will of course be getting a good fire going. My Shangrila is great when you don't need a big fire but I'm a bit concerned about Sil-Nylon when I got a good winter fire going.
Can anyone suggest a similar size (or slightly smaller) tent made from say fire retarded poly-cotton? So my pooch and I can stay warm.
I do like the tipi style like the shangrila and would prefer that but a ridge would do.
I don't want to spend a fortune, around the 100 quid mark. I might streatch it a bit for a nice tipi stlye though ;)

Which Shangri-la do you have? I have a Golite Hex 3 and the heat of a lantern is enough to keep that warm.

The Polish poncho/tents look OK but from a safety point of view are far too small to have a fire or woodburner in (just my opinion).

Hi,
I'm a little bothered about having it in the tent. Especially with my pooch around, I'd have to suspend it quite high up, it would have to have an efficient heat deflector on top. Guess I could make one, you got me thinking ... Cheers!
Which one are you using, in what temperature have you found it effective and what about condensation? I would be using the nest also.
Mine is the newer Shangi-La3.

Thank you for the Polish Army Lavuu suggestion DavidJT. I think just a bit too basic for my liking, ok yes I do make my own shelters in better weather so I'm used to basic but during the winter months I want a tad more protection. 20 years ago may be but I'm just a bit to long in the tooth now ;)

Any more Tipi Style suggestions guys an gals?

I modded a tent peg into a lantern hanger (from the tent pole), I'll try and photograph it for you later. This raises the lantern off the floor to a height that suits your needs (and keeps the dog safe) and I always use the nest insert as well.

This is the little lantern I use, throws out great light, frugal on gas, nice background heat and all for a tenner delivered

The lantern stores in a small plastic box.

That is a great deal, and free shipping to the UK :) Can't beat that, thank you for the link.

What type gas cannisters does it use?

I wonder if you could use your silnylon tent as a pattern, cut out some triangles of polycotton to teh same sizes and either sew it up yourself or get a seamstress to do it for you? Should be reasonably easy if, if we're talking about a cotton tent without mesh or floor?

For a plan use the link on DD hammocks website to the Tarp usage page and look at the wigwam pattern. I'm going to use it for a re-enactment bell/tipi tent 3.5m in diametre and 3 m high. Too big you say.. but I have planned a 2.5m diametre 2m? high model as well for use with 2 oz waterproof nylon as a lightweight version for hiking.

I recently invested in a Ti-Goat Cylinder Stove and modded my Shangra Li to take the pipe.

Work amazingly and out in the snow over Christmas it was great. My missus was a little unsure about snow camping but its so warm that I didn't even bother with hood on my sleeping bag!

http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi...ums/thread_display.html?forum_thread_id=33086 - An DIY version, but very similar and give a good idea

http://www.titaniumgoat.com/stoves.html - Slightly heavier square version.

Both version collapse and are very easy to set up

Thanks for telling us about the Tarp Tutorial bit on the DD hammocks site. I have the Tarpology 2 page guide but that is for an oblong tarp & so does not work with a square tarp like my 3m x 3m DD Tarp. There are loads of different tarp setups I will be trying this weekend....

good spot Bilmo, really like that!

I bought the 500 (next size up) for my wife's birthday earlier in the year and we're both well pleased with it. They're polycotton but there'll be some condensation in them this time of year. Its a problem in any single skin tent in cold weather unless you go for some pretty ferocious heating.

I like that DIY text stove on the BackpackingLight forum, interesting. I may have to investigate that some more now that I have a couple of weeks off.
