Skewer and roasting question

You create what is called a keyhole fire. Imagine the stereotypical shape of a keyhole, with a round bit and a rectangular bit below it. Now create that. The round bit is your fire with flames, the rectangular bit is where your embers go. Simple as that. If you are sensible, you can stick a trivet on the round bit, and boil the kettle over the fire while you're making your embers and thus not waste the heat.

Surround the fire with nice igneous rocks, and you can take the rocks to bed with you to keep warm during the night...
