is it possible to preset the mag/grid difference on this compass as you can on the type 15 and Sunnto model - or am I going to have to do some maths every time I use it (if I get 1)

no preset on these you have to add 4 degrees manual , the ranger series by silva have an adjustment screw you can preset and leave.
You will only have to do the maths once. (well, once each year anyway) When you get the map, work out the GMA, write the GMA and the year on the map and then either add or subtract the GMA depending on what way you are converting (either from Grid to Mag....Add, or from Mag to Grid......subtract)
Or you could mark a line on your compass with a very thin indelible pen and ruler for the main area you'll be using it. Also write your 100m double pace on your compass with the same pen - mines 65
