Is it just me, or are most knives in the "pocket knife" category just "so-so"?

Don't get me wrong on this, I love my SAK's dearly and the one that's my EDC I've had since I was six. Convex the blades a little bit and it's not such a bad little toy. Even so, it's not the greatest edge holder out there and I wish it was a little tougher. (Frosts Mora, I love thee. Let me count thy ways)

I mean, I've tried Schrade's high-carbon in their Old Timer and wasn't too impressed, I didn't like their stainless much either. Anyone got any experience with Case cutlery or Leatherman? Geepers, isn't there a little knife out there that'll take some serious abuse?

Is there anyone out there who feels my angst on this? Is there a wee little pocket knife out there for me that doesn't have run of the mill steel? Or am I just preaching to the choir? Why can't I slice cardboard and hemp rope all day with my little toy?

Is there an SAK model that comes with VG-10?

Since you are Canadian your "pocket knife" defination is probably a bit wider than what our UK friends are limited to for an EDC but are you just looking for a cutting edge or a multitool type knife?

I'm looking for something about the size of an SAK, but something with thicker blade stock, a more aggressive grind and harder steel. I just bought an Opinel #7 for a buddy, but I'll never use them again myself because I find their blades to be too thin.

I've used or tried out a whole bunch of different brands of knives in the "pocket" category but I've never really been totally satisifed with them. Granted, I'm probably using the knives for tasks they weren't designed for (I'm pretty brutal with kit) but I just wish there was something out that there that I could do some serious slicing with, something that won't dull as quickly as an SAK. Because let's face it, as much as hate to admit the truth, their blades could be bit better!

I guess I tend towards the opposite view. For a hard use pocket knife for things like stripping wire or scraping gaskets, I like the softer blades. They tend to dent but not chip, and are easy to bring back to sharp. I was a mechanic for ten years or so and stripped a mile of wire and scraped a ton of gaskets off engines and transmissions using a Schrade stockman, a Camillus electricians knife, various SAKS, a leatherman, and a cheapo barlow. The last knife I would put in my toolbox would be an expensive slippie with uber steel.

You could get the victorinox soldier. It's got a thicker, stronger blade than the normal swiss army knives, and is light, despite having the bottle opener and stuff. The US army penknife is as cheap as chips, and if it's a tough as the british one you could use it forever.

Wow, I didn't really expect replies to this so soon. Thanks a bunch for the input guys, and thanks even more for listening to me whine.

Those Spyderco's and Griptillians are way past my budget right now, I need to wait until I finish paying off my tuition for the fall and spring semesters at my university. (Oooh...I'm educated)

I really like that Fallkniven, but it too is probably about of my price line. Does anyone know anything about the SOG brand?

Hey there,

The fallkniven U2 is the best folder I have up to now. I like the other stuff that is in a swiss army knife (scissors, saw, can opener,...), but for the blade, this is the top!

It is not VG10, but a laminated steel with an inner edge steel called SGPS (super gold powder steel, I think). this holds an edge even better than VG10.

They are not expensive if you consider the blade material and finishing touch. There is no play in any direction and it locks with a solid click (I love that!).

If you want a nice little knife, get one. If you need scissors and things like that, get one AND a SAK.
