I'm looking for some advice from those well versed in the use of Facebook for selling stuff.

What's the safest and best way of selling? Local facebook groups or marketplace? Do you tend to do cash only, pick up only? Or if posting, how do you protect yourself from fake claims of item not arriving and so on? Seems like a minefield. But I'm accumulating tents...

eBay is probably my preference outside of this forum (BCUK being number 1 preference). As I am somewhat skeptical of people online, I also video me packing the item and putting address label on so that people can’t say “he just sent a brick!” or whatever. Royal Mail postage provides a photograph of item being delivered.

Otherwise Marketplace might be OK, but I’d want cash and want to exchange somewhere public. Never thought it wise to give random people on the internet my address when they know I have either high value items, or cash from just selling said high value item.

For the very little selling I do I usually use a third party - i.e. someone who regularly sells on social media. But, to be honest, it rarely gets that far as, by the time I've told a few people that I'm selling something, there'll be someone that knows someone that will want to buy it :)

We sold a lot of stuff on Facebook local sell & seek pages when clearing our parents’ estate and when we downsized. Marketplace was a waste of time. Just attracted con artists & weirdos.
Local pages were much better. Cash on collection or bank transfer on collection only. I won’t post Facebook stuff.
For bushcrafty stuff definitely post here. Never had a problem at BCUK.

Well that was pretty unanimous advice. At sort point in the future I will be listing tents and perhaps other stuff here on BCUK. Just need to sort out membership. Would much rather support this forum than Facebook anyway. Thanks all :)

Ebay is good. This forum is the best place I have ever used to buy and sell. I would say that there are some wrong uns in the world but my experience is that most people will do you a good turn before a bad one. I wouldn't advise against being vigilant though. I rarely, if ever have any problems and paypal payments for goods and services covers you for any loss. x
