The Triffids are coming. Fortunately I must have been so drunk last night that I missed the green meteorites that blinded everyone else, but, when I looked behind the old barn where I threw some pumpkin seeds earlier in the year, there they were

Sinister things - not only have they swarmed up the side of the barn but climbed a 9' hedge and are climbing down the other side...they sit there gradually taking over the world, rattling their stems. People tell me they are pumpkins - we know better - we had to fight back......

We grabbed one of their "pumpkins"

BB sliced off the outer rind

Then cut it in half and scooped out the soft pulp and seeds

The flesh was chopped into 1" cubes

Mean time I had a wander round the garden for a few more ingredients

Onions (1 per lb of chopped pumpkin)

Thyme (1 1/2 tbs of chopped leaves per lb of pumpkin)

I grabbed some garlic thats been drying in the shed (1 clove per lb of pumpkin)

BB sorted out a load of chicken stock (1 1/4 pints per lb of pumpkin)

The onions were roughly chopped and sweated off in a couple of tablespoons of olive oil

Then the pumpkin was added with the garlic (crushed) and the lot was softened for a couple of minutes

I grated a couple of orange and juiced them (half an orange per lb of pumpkin)

Then I chopped the thyme having stripped out the stalks

The orange juice and rind, stock, and thyme was put in the big stock pan and the lot simmered for 20 minutes

After that we used a potato crusher to reduce it all to pulp and then gave it a quick whiz with a stick blender

And we had it for tea!

For all of that - I've been back out to the barn and they don't seem afraid...I think they are talking to each other

Self Sufficient - sadly not yet - our oranges aren't big enough this year (although they have fruited) so the Oranges were bought in - as was the olive oil although I plan to make our own next year. Still - we're getting there

Silkstone, Blighty!
Maybe not fully self sufficient, but I've no doubt you are cutting your bills by quite a great deal usiong all of this home grown produce, and it'll be good for you too. No GM Carp to rot your innards, just proper fresh, healthy produce. Can't say fairer than that!

If you and Spam want to pop round for Samhein Mesquite, Mr grandaddy triffid is running too big for my largest pan already (and that hold 35pints) - I reckon there has to be 30lb of usuable meat on him so far - probably 40 or 50lbs all up

Not made pumpkin pie - is it good?

Pumpkin pie is great, like most pumpkin recipes it's all the other ingredients that make it taste good ( I was thinking your soup would be pretty good without the pumpkin, though not the nice orange colour)

Here is a typical pie recipe

http://www.joyofbaking.com/pumpkinpie.html

and here are the ingredients for the filling, loads of eggs, cream sugar and spice...no way that's going to taste bad.

Pumpkin Filling:

3 large eggs

2 cups fresh pumpkin puree or 1 - 15 ounce can (425 grams) pure pumpkin

1/2 cup (120 ml) heavy whipping cream

1/2 cup (110 grams) light brown sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

1/2 teaspoon salt
