I find the DC4 easier to use by hand, thumb at the bottom and two fingers on the top. Once you set the angle you soon get a feel for it, practising on a cheap blade and using a marker pen really helps.

I've always just used a bit of damp fabric between the stone and a flat surface (fence post, tree stump etc). Pocket handkerchief is fine.
