Used this thing for quite a few years. It is NOT made for comfort!!
However very tough, had other military Bergan s from Lowe and Berghaus all eventually sufferd damage, this Bergan just goes on forever.
To achieve any sort of comfort with it you have to pad the shoulder and back straps out with foam,
The shoulder straps are padded but all the weight is taken on a small thin strap over the pads, after a short while u would get a tingling in the hands as the blood supply was being cut off!
You can remove the main sack and use the harness and frame on its own,to attach other equipment:,jerrycans or radios for example. The frame making up the most weight of the pack. The flap on the rucksack has 2 very short tapes to tie it down, better to get two etxtra long utility starps and thread them around the sack body and use them.
I always thought if they could redesign the frame, make it lighter and make better shoulder straps it would be an ok service rucksacl, plus it sits high on the back and does not interfere with your webbing equipment.
The only reason i used it was that it was free, and took what ever abuse came its way,but really you have to be a masochist to want to wear one today!
