I say, does anyone know where you can get the old traditional style safari jackets for a non-rip off price so that I can look like an extra on Out of Africa?

I got a 70's suede jobby, but it's not the same. I know Survival Aids did them in the early 90's but can't find a thing nowadays.

Also, does anyone do an SAS type smock out of plain OG ventile for sensible money?

Your's, salivating in trepidation, Spacemonkey II. (First one blew up on launch).

There is an American supplier to reenactors called What Price Glory at www.whatpriceglory.com, that has WWII type bush jackets in both the plain issue style and a so-called tailored style (like officers wore) and they both come in KD and JG. I'm not sure if he has matching trousers for the tailored style.

I've purchased a few things from him and have been completely satisfied. I especially like the WWII windproof smock. And just like those issued during WWII, I rarely wear the trousers.

My only reservation is having to second-guess sizes. But I hit the size just right when I ordered a pair of surplus brogues that were just caked in polish.

where ever the military send me!
Since the Canadian Army switched to the Pixilated Combats all their old OG Uniforms should be up for grabs at rock bottom prices. If you do a quick search on Google you might just get lucky. They are hard wearing kit, lots of pockets and excellent quality.

I got mine from a canadian lad i work with when he got his new kit sent too him :^) lucky me.

If you do a "bush jacket" search on evil-bay now, an old British Army green jungle jacket will come up, priced at £6. This certainly has the "lived in look"; I had one in the Far East in the 60s and they do the biz.

I realize I'm a little late to the conversation, but I have been doing some shopping around for safari jackets too. LLBean has one called the "explorer jacket" and it's nice, but expensive. The best I found for the money was a Cabelas Safari jacket.
They have one for 80 dollars

one for 50

and a Berretta brand for 140+

The tan or sand coloured U.S. Army "bdu" jackets that are available from us surplus dealers are pretty much the equivalent of a safari jacket.
I don't think Orvis supply these jackets any more but they were good except for badly sewn buttons which were prone to falling off.
Farlows of Pall Mall may also supply them but will be expensive.
Happy trails.
