I'd say it depends on the needles and the maker, but housing 60 - 70 mm long and 20 - 30 mm wide isnt that unusual, I think. All sorts of decorations and lids adds to the overall length.

Ironically my six year old was watching the Sweden episode of RM last night and the Saami chap on there had one, looked to be only marginally bigger than a match safe....think his was made of birch bark with cord wrapped round a bit of birch and slipped inside.

Hope that helps :)

Mrs Sandbender has a tiny sewing kit, the main part of which is about 5 cm long.

It looks like twisted and laid soft leather to me.
Just split a length (see the loop end ? from there down split it) and twist and roll together.

Very smart needlecase Sandbender :)

That brings something to mind; did Wayland not do a tutorial on these a few years ago ?

If Gary doesn't see this thread, someone give him a heads up ?

Leather, especially soft leather like that, works really well for cordage :D
It stays supple in a way that more fibrous materials often don't.

I'd suggest you make it at least 5cm, mabye a bit longer.

This is based on myself having to abandon one just last week as I realized it was too small for my glover's and saddler's needles, my main users. I't was about 4.3cm.

Hope this helps.
