Almost forgot to mention  :sad6: . The ongoing work to improve the site's rather rundown Chapel area is pretty much done. This area is now a nondenominational area of peace and reflection. We're always able to make use of this area but given the timing of this Meet I thought I'd let everyone know that it is available.

Hello Phil, All,

As you know this is a great meet and one of the essentials is.........THE LOVELY FIRE...........

Usually the task of bringing suitable fire wood to site has been taken on by Niel and Claire and Phil.s. This has been on a contribution basis that to date has never covered the cost of the exercise. Not even close.

Neil, Claire and Phil have always gladly provided a large amount of wood for this event with pleasure and goodwill but i know that niether has an overabundance this year.

I think it would be good if ALL of us who are able can bring as much suitable firewood as possible (Not painted or treated as folk do sometimes cook on the fire) Even just a few logs will help. We can split on site but no chain saws!

I can bring some with me and may get a donation of some wood from Mendip Shooting Ground but that is by no means certain. In a rural area we all value this commodity, we depend on it for our heating.

Come on folks, if you can......then do. We'll all be colder otherwise!!

Hi Rob, the efforts to bring in wood on some of the recent Meets have been appreciated.

But what to do if some feel that they're not welcome in the communal area unless they pay to be there? The same goes if folk stay away from Meets because they feel uncomfortable making use of the communal area to catch up with people.

Numbers at (most, if not all, of the various regional/area) Meets are suffering badly at the moment and it might be that, for the moment, the days of Meets are numbered ~ but if a number of people identify a variable which we have a level of control over, then we have to do something to see whether we can address the balance.

A good fire can make for good socialising. But if it keeps folk away then having it's self defeating.

I've bought three dumpy bags of wood for the fire so I'll have to bring the van rather than the car obviously! It is also a nice long drive so a contribution towards costs would be appreciated.

We'll also bang some poles in and create a tarp windbreak because that chill wind that comes across the field is evil.

I'll setup the kitchen area with table and stove etc. for communal use.

I'm guessing the parachute is going up?

You've kept abreast of post #01, right?

A bit of nattering behind the scenes ... There is wood on site at the moment, we just need to fetch and process it. One/two/a few have questioned having a supply of wood brought in from outside and feel that it is close to being a tax on sitting in the communal area. To this end I am going to suggest that folks attending either bring in a supply of good, burnable, wood themselves or are willing to find, fetch and process the stuff already on site. And the site politely asks that we don't burn quantities of heavily processed wood ~ there is some leeway, but it is better that we err on the cautious and respectful side than push our luck ;) . (We are aware that some may not be able to bring a supply. Some may not be capable of fetching and/or processing. Some might not be able to bring and also be unable to fetch and/or process. Don't worry or stress, you're still welcome ... we'll just make you the tea monkey ;) )

Quoted passage is from post #14 and was edited into post #01 on 06 October.

If I am being too subtle tell me, I can be more blunt and to the point.

The 'chute will be going up in its usual spot on PC.11. We'll not be making use of the fire site next to the building. I'll be arriving on foot with it being dropped off later*, so it'll be going up on the Friday morning.

* Because it's 20kg and I can't carry it as well as my kit.

If it helps I can bring my big communal tarp along with me for the Thursday night just in case it's at all damp

Hi Phil,

I must admit I don't think I read all the previous posts before posting as this thread is usually a name list of who's attending so I jump to the last one, add my name.

I understand the sentiments fully and never assume there is wood on site. I centainly do not want to inadvertantly discourage anyone and of course we can all keep ourselves warm.

It has been a bit of an assumed focal point and a collective effort. Also it may have been assumed that folk were happy to contribute to this one way or another but not agreed to properly.

Forgive me if I have been caught up in the assumed status quo. If people do not want to feel caught up by pressure then that is quite right. I don't think that anyone wants to feel there is a "tax", it is just trying to be practical thats all.

Next time I will thumb through the whole thread before posting! I totally missed the fact that there is some wood on site this time around and that is always fun to process!

No harm intended, none done I hope!

Great to hear there is still wood left about after a long Summer because I suspect it may be a bit chilly next week. Last TORM was unusual for onsite free wood to be available and it made a welcome addition to the fire. Of course it is necessary for wood to be well seasoned and dry to burn without brought in hardwood to provide a hot enough base, as was needed last time.

I find it strange that anyone in the Bushcraft community would share the comfort and warmth of a fire but expect someone else to have to work and pay for it. Contributing towards communal costs is a normal part of real life for most people I thought, in reality a benefit has a cost, more than some people think. I'm guessing TORM still charges to get in, the site still expects £5 a night, transport has a cost and the Bushmoot ain't yet free! I've generally experienced the Spirit of Bushcraft to be about sharing and personal responsibility.

Looking forward to next week and seeing everyone.

No one's said anything about expecting anything for free. A number of people have approached me about the ability to 'choose' how to contribute to the communal fire. As it is the perceived lack of choice is putting people off attending. This is not a good thing and needs to be addressed.

I take it for granted that you agree with the ability to choose for yourself and that choice should not arbitrarily enforced onto others.

As I said in post #14 ...
I am going to suggest that folks attending either bring in a supply of good, burnable, wood themselves or are willing to find, fetch and process the stuff already on site.
We might get cold, time will tell. Time to have a little faith ...

Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts seem to have no problem sourcing plenty of good, burnable, wood from around the site. Perhaps our aims and endeavours should be higher?

Defiantly not frozen stuff dropping out of the sky at the mo, bit nippy too ~ ideal for both kit and skills testing :D .

I've been on site and checked the pitch this evening ~ checked as much as you can do with a torch, anyway

The pitch is fine, the ground before and after the bridge leading onto PC.11 is good and solid at this time.

Bring on the weekend! :dancer:
