Not quite the same but, American Plains Indian pipe stems were nearly always split first, then cleaned of pith before rebinding the two halves again...been meaning to do this but since i gave up the weed there seems little point... :(

I don't see the relevance of an ornamental pipe....

Elder pith is easy to remove green or dry....you can scrape it with your fingernail (if you have any, that is) :D
