A little to the north of me the soil changes dramatically from chalk to sandstone. We also have a lot of references to charcoal burning and cannonball making.

After the Chesnut was harvested for fencing and walking sticks, a lot of the local Alder and Hornbeam was cut to cords and loaded onto trains where it made its way to Scotland to be turned into charcoal for the manufacture of arms.

I know a couple of fine ochre producing springs here.
