Red Shoulder Hawk in back garden

Morning I went out in my back garden about 6;30 this morning and heard a noise then looked up to see what I've just found out was a Red Shouldered Hawk sat about 4ft from me.
Are these Hawks still common.

Are you in the UK? If so it's likely to be an escape (North American Species) Or could it have been a red kite?
