I like the use of Chicago screws to bring it all together... I presume that is because the material is so tough?

Nope, not really, a stitching awl will pass through it fine. It's more a case of time ease and aesthetics....and an excess of studs. Rivetting is too noisy for the time of day I'm able to do these little projects.
