It's my Dads birthday soon and I would like to organise him a decent rechargeable LED torch for use when walking the dog mainly. He walks the dog twice a day, everyday and can be out for a 2 hours at a time in all weathers.

He won't wear a head torch so something tube style and fairly compact that can be carried in a pocket would be good.

Budget is unknown at the moment. If there is something really worth the money then I will consider it.

Thanks,

I just bought a Fenix E11 to use as an EDC during the dark winter months and am very happy with it.

Pop a NiMh battery in it and you're good to go. 8 hour runtime on "low", which is still pretty darn bright.

Do you want the torch to be usb pluggable to recharge or are you happy using batteries and charger. Also do you have a preference for battery size. does dad own any recharging gear and batteries already?

No battery preference, Battery size only restricted by size of the torch really ( ie: 6 D Cell Maglite is way too big and heavy), preferably pocket sized,

No previous charging gear(although he has got USB available but only when the PC is switched on which it isn't overnight),

So, Preferably mains charged and charging of the battery whilst inside the torch. Think simple, quick and easy because he works all day and usually gets in after 7pm at night.

Thanks for the fenix suggestion, looking at that now.

having a mains recharge will limit you alot imo and quality is poor at the low cost end

led lenser are now doing recharge torches that should be very good but ive not looked at reviews yet. their torches are normally bomb proof and will take some serious abuse and keep coming back for more. this one is on my wishlist for dog walking purposes

That Peli looks good. just watching a youtube vid review now. Although a bit bigger than I thought about I can see some bonuses to that.
I did look at the Maglites too. Led lenser defo an option. Those Lummis are very nice. Thanks so far All.

I would recommend a Fenix LD22 and a charger with 4 aa nimh batteries.

It runs off two aa batteries, so if you get him 4 batteries he can charge 2 of them at any time and keep the torch fully charged at all times. Runtime is very good. On full blast (190 lumens) it easily lasts a full walk. Almost 2.5hrs.With some care, using medium mode (42 lumens) during half of each walk, it will only need switching batteries once a week. Around 15hrs. Assuming 2500 nimh batteries.

It is sleek enough to carry in a pocket without any problems.

A cheaper Fenix torch with similar performance but less features is the Fenix E25. I have no personal experience of that torch, but it might actually be a better choice since it seems easier to use.

A cheaper alternative for single aa, with limited runtime, but otherwise surprisingly good performance is:

You still need a charger and aa batteries.
