A local sawmill specializes in reclaiming old logs from local river. They were originally cut and floated downriver and stored in water to preserve them until they could be milled and in the process, many were lost. Many of them were originally cut and lost over 100 years ago.

Here's one cypress

That cypress is something else.

Is the water short of oxygen and wood boring insects? I can't imagine a log lasting that long in a UK river.

Some of the water is short of oxygen (particularly the shallow sloughs) but not most. Almost all waters in North America are more or less free of wood harming insects and larvae. That's why the old sawmills used shallow ponds to store logs.

Yes, lovely wood.

One of the reasons I watch Ax Men is for Shelby Stanga and his swamp logging operation and some of the insane stuff he gets upto.

Bit mind boggling how much axe cut wood still seems about.

Some very special wood there; I especially like the Curly Pine, fabulous! I bet that stuff ain't cheap over there, over here it would be a king's ransom!
