Does anybody know of the complete and up to date list of what he has been a part of on TV and DVD. The reason i ask, is that i woudlnt mind building a complete collection up and need to know of what he has appeared in or produced.

Cheers all,

Paul

Please tell me you did do a search for this first before posting your query

How complete do you mean? He's been a guest on various programmes - chat shows
and features (eg The Big Read) - or do you mean just the programmes he has presented?

If the latter most of them have been listed in the thread below, as well as many others.
http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22927

If you search for individual programme names you should find some other information too.
  • The Essential Guide to Rocks
  • Tracks
  • World of Survival
  • Trips that money can't buy
  • Extreme Survival
  • Real Heroes of Telemark
  • Bushcraft Survival
  • Wild Food
An incomplete list from the BFI's database
http://ftvdb.bfi.org.uk/sift/individual/666213?view=credit

Bushcraft / Extreme Survival / Wild Food are available in DVD format; the others have
not been released. Woodlore offer a freakishly speedy service for the DVDs although
you can get them in the high street and from amazon - all good dvd shops, that sort of
thing :)

He's on ITV on Monday night (11.05pm) talking about some new venture at the Eden
Project.

His Woodlore website lists TV repeats and other appearances and is your best bet
for catching something if you've not seen it:
http://www.raymears.com/ray.cfm?sec=whatsrayupto

Your second best bet is to get a subscription (if you don't already have one) to a TV
package that includes the Ray Mears channel, otherwise known as UKTV Documentary ;)

The confusing thing is that programmes get called by different names either by the TV
listings, or by people here, colloquially.

Most of them are prefaced "Ray Mears" so you have "Ray Mears' Real Heroes of
Telemark" or just "The Real Heroes of Telemark" and the many variants of 'Tracks' or
'Country Tracks' or 'Ray Mears' Tracks / Country Tracks'. "Trips that money can't buy"
is also known as "Extreme Jungle" and "Jungle Trek" - it's a rare addition to the listings
but is on again soon (on UKTV Doc).

Next year there is to be something called "Ray Mears goes walkabout" but I've no idea
when it will be broadcast.

I wonder if we ought to have a sticky about this?!

Which is illegal, not to mention unfair with respect to the material that is available
for purchase,
and tends to get these threads shut down.

Very true, as most of his material is available I find downloading his DVD's a bit wrong. Saying that, I have downloaded some of his unavailable stuff, but if it was ever released on DVD I would snap it straight up.

>>if it was ever released on DVD...

I've not done very much about this to be honest - I was in the middle of scheming but
intelligence from people attending the 'behind the lens' tour suggested that it might not
be wildly appreciated if they were re-released. Wasn't sure what to make of that, so
have left it for now.

Still hoping for a 25-year anniversary box-set with unreleased b-sides though :D

You know, that's a damn fine idea, perhaps we should petition Woodlore. The only issue might be who owns copyright on each different series.

More likely the BBC. But I'd rather get 'permission' (or at least indifference) from Woodlore
before launching any campaign that would have an impact on them. I'm not sure how to
proceed given that it seems Ray wasn't that keen (when asked recently at his tour) about
the re-release of earlier material.

I might have 'misquoted' the comment though, it might have been in relation to a particular
series or book rather than a general comment on all unreleased or out of print material.

Clem and Switch might have more of an idea - I think they were the originators of the idea
to get stuff released, and there's certainly a lot of potential custom. Which I imagine can
only have increased since the last time it was discussed!!

The last time it was discussed...

That may be the case in the UK but not for me here in Switzerland, or for anyone in Austria or Germany or Sweden or....well basically anywhere there is freedom as it is perfectly legal.

The question of copying programmes is a complex one. We have a DVD recorder on two TV's in the house, so lets say I'm in work when a programme is broadcast, is it illegal for me to set the timer and copy to a blank DVD and watch later? Should I then destroy the DVD after watching it?

I believe that is legal. But you can only watch it in private domestic premises. Doesn't need destroying.
