If it's a Vapalux, then yeah, it's a great lamp. They burn white parrafin - which isn't that expensive and a full tank will last an evening easy. Have a look here ( http://www.base-camp.co.uk/ ) for for info to help you identify what you have - I don't recall any Vapalux with a red top. There should be some identifying marks on it somewhere...

it says `made in england` on the base and `bialladin` on the glass which may not be original

Thanks for the advice im tempted to clean the paint off the base and polish up the brass....

but the red enamel top is damaged.

not bad for £3, though

Sorry, I know this thread is a couple of months old, but I have a Bialaddin 320...

Is yours the same as this?

If so, you have a nice, relatively rare lamp. If it's in generally good condition it's well worth fettling it up. The 320 model was made by Bialaddin from 1965 I think, but in '69 Bialaddin became part of Vapalux and the lamp was rebranded as the Vapalux M320. So your lamp would date around '65 to '69.

For comparison, here's a Vapalux British army issue M320, same lamp just 30 years younger...

If you still have the lamp Tengu, I gave some mantles to Shelley at the Moot. I seem to have found another one, I saw it when I got back so if I find it I can send it on to you.
