Im taking my cross facsimle to the conference.

And so I need to mont it for display.

I found an old Windsor and Newton easel at the car boot. Ideal pretty much.

Ill clean it of dust and paint.

Should I varnish it? Oil it? or just leave it as is.

Its beech wood by the way.

Mine gets cleaned (and yes, you can use soap and water on wood, just don't leave it wet, I use an old towelling flannel) and then gently wax polished when it's dry. I know someone who used the boot brush on his to keep things looking good as well as doing the wood good :)
I find that the wax polish doesn't leave anything sticky, and that it cleans off splashes and paint very easily later. Also makes it easy to clean if I've been using charcoal or calligraphy inks too, and they have shellac in them so can be tough, iimmc.
