My only experience of fee-standing tents is the MSR series and it was great. I have a MSR Hubba available for sale if yr interested. It comes with the additional footprint.
I bought a Vango Chinook for the same reasons, but for use canoeing in northern Scotland where often the best places to camp are on sand and shingle beaches.
I bought the Chinook 200 (2 person) as a solo tent and it gives plenty of space for me, but you would want to be good friends if you were sharing it with another adult.

I forgot to say that the Chinook is entirely freestanding, pitches outer first or inner and outer together and comes in a 3 person version (the Chinook 300). The only problem might be getting hold of one as I don't think they make them any more. An alternative could be the Vango Halo, which only needs two pegs to hold the porch out.
Cheers, Michael.
