Aye, looks like I'll be making the lids from "oak" after all, just picked up a knocked apart small table at the boot for a pound. The two levels are 16 inch square , 1/2 inch thick and made from two boards each. The legs I can cut up to make the batons on the undersides and the handles. I just need to sand the varnish/ stain off them first. The boards are quarter sawn and if I'm really lucky they are beech stained to look like oak as I've a fondness for that wood for kitchen stuff.
