Site sorted, had spotted it on a walk earlier in the day, setting up to make things more comfortable.

Safe knife skills, I upgraded him to a Mora but neglected to take photos. Had the obligatory chat about arteries and not to cut them.

Nice to know we can walk out the door and have this within 15 minutes tramp. Will be back for more stealthy adventures soon.

Cheers

Nice one. I take my lad out for overnighters in the forest too he loves it.he's even got all his own kit now. could I ask how old your lad is and how long has he been using a knife.my lads 5 n he's been asking for one of his own.ive let him strip bark from sticks etc with strict supervision.i can tell he's not quite ready yet but would like too hear your opinion on the subject

Hi Alreetmiowdmuka, Jack's first overnighter was at age four (corrected from three), two nights on the beach and we've been lucky enough to get how quite a few times since, he's 5 now. He has an SAK of his own which he carries himself and is trusted with although he is under strict instruction never to use it without supervision. I watch him closely and try not to get distracted as it doesn't take much for a little one to forget the rules. He's used a full sized Mora which in a controlled environment is probably safer than the SAK. A lot depends on the child, the supervisor and situation. I'm not sure when I'll trust him to use it alone, not for a long while yet. I have been fortunate to have received good tuition from experienced knife handlers and try to pass on what I've learnt, safety, different types of cut using different hand positions and styles, care and maintenance. Time will tell how good a job I've managed, I expect him to cut himself, we all do, I'm just trying to teach him the respect and care to make sure its never serious. Hope that helps. :)

Cheers

Rich

Yeah it does thanks for taking the time.i'm gonna get him one next year I think.i'm far from an over protective parent but he ain't ready yet.I agree with your original post about a fixed blade being safer n will probably go down that route with him.

Blimey... read that he's 5 years old and my arguments with my wife over my 7 year old seem a bit daft now.

Looks like you both had an adventure though, and thats the main thing :) Maybe its time I took the kid gloves off and let my 7 year old join in... the 16 yr old in the family certainly enjoys camping out in the woods. He's arranging with his college to get a day off so he can attend a meet... thats a dedicated puppy right there!

Adventure is the word we use too. Always a 'mini adventure'. After I Got divorced I went from going out maybe twice a year to twice a month.... bit of a drastic approach though! :)

Actually, just checked, he was four when he went on his first 'wild camp', it was July 2014 on the beach, I thought it was two summers back but I was wrong.

Two nights under the trail star, I learnt a lot from that, especially about how scary tides are when they get within 10 feet of your shelter. Had my sleeping bag and bivvy bag out of the shelter on the bank, bags packed and ready to move before it got that close just in case. And there was an emergency route back to the car 10 minutes walk away but still freaky watching that tide creep up the beach. Much more experienced now thank god.... :)
